We judged 7 meads Tuesday night July 21 at Mr. D's. There were actually a couple more, but we decided to do only one mead per entrant so we could get home before the middle of the night. There was no question on which mead scored the best - it was Bill Keiser's red raspberry, cinnamon, clove, cayenne, still standard mead. However depending on how I add up the scores the other winners could be me, Nick or Bart. If weighted by removing the hi and low scores and by how the highest ranking judge scored them, then second is Nick's ancho chile dry standard mead and third is Bart's traditional standard semi-sweet mead. Picking up a point for sharing are Don Vease with his sparkling dry standard mead, Ron Lutz with his still, standard, dry mead, Mike Jahner with his blackberry standard still melomel, and me for my medium, sack, sparkling, braggot. Next month is Amber Hybrids!

Ten of us met in a small corner of Mr. D's last night (August 11) to judge the club's monthly competition and learn about the Amber Hybrid style. We judged six entries and Geoff Hall's Dusseldorf Alt came out on top, followed very closely by Bart Rohr's California Common and then by Thomas Lyle's Cal Common in third. Also picking up a point for entering are Nick Streeter, Bill Keiser, and Brian Blair. Next month we'll learn about Amber Lagers.

Eight people came to Mr. D's for judging the monthly competition, German Amber Lagers (Vienna and Oktoberfest). There were only three submissions this time and Bart's Vienna Lager finished first, followed by Jeremy's Oktoberfest and then by my feeble attempt at an Oktoberfest. This increases Bart's lead with three competitions left in the year, but there are at least three other brewers with a good chance to overtake him. We'll see what happens after Belgian Strong Ales, Porter and Christmas Beers.

Eight people, a couple new to formal judging, met at Mr. D's last night, Oct. 20, to sample some Belgian Strong Ales and judge our club's monthly competition. We had a total of five entries with Mike Melton's Golden Strong Ale coming out on top, followed by Bart Rohr's Dubbel, then Bill Keiser's Dark Strong in third. Matthew McKinnon and Thomas Lyle also entered a Tripel and a Dubbel, respectively. All were very good. It was a pleasant evening with good company and good homebrew. We'll be sending Mike's beer to the AHA Club-Only competition, which takes place in December in Dunedin. Bart strengthens his lead in the standings with his second place. Next month is Porter.

A dozen of us had a nice meeting centered around Porter last night, Nov. 17, at Mr. D's. We discussed the history, had some commercial examples and then we all judged five entries. My Baltic Porter came in first this time with a score of just over 38 points. Bart's Brown Porter came in second with an average of 37. Nick's Robust Porter was a very close third. Carl Woodward and Mark Henry also had very good entries and both will pick up a point for sharing. Matthew brought in a really nice Wood-Aged Porter that we all enjoyed after the regular judging along with some examples that Carl brought in.
All in all it was a lot of fun for a "school night."
This gives Bart an insurmountable lead in the standings for Club Brewer of the Year, 2009! Congratulations!
Next month is Christmas Beers. 'Should be interesting.

Mike Melton asked about the upcoming 2010 monthly interclub competition schedule. We haven't set that yet, except to say that January will be English Brown Ales. We always try to associate it with the AHA Club-Only Competition (COC) schedule and they include, in this order, English Brown Ale, American Ale, Extract Beers, Mead, Sour, and Strong Ale. That should give you a start until we set the upcoming schedule. If anyone has any styles he or she would love to include next year let us all know.

We had the final monthly judging last night (Dec. 15) at Mr. D's with eight people evaluating four Christmas beers. Mark Stober's almost famous annual Maple Cinnamon Double Bock took first place this time, with Matt McKinnon's spiced beer with pumpkin following in second and Bart's Belgian spiced beer in third. I forgot to write down the spicing in either of these, but they were both very good. These three guys will receive the final brewpons for the January drawing. Thomas Joyce also had an excellent beer with bourbon and vanilla added.
A word about the January Brewpon raffle: Mark has been acquiring a considerable list of raffle items for the January meeting, but the only people eligible are those who won medals in a 2009 Florida Circuit competition of in any of the monthly club competitions. The drawing will be weighted for the biggest medal winners (most brewpons), but only one prize will be awarded per person. The grand prize will be a full conference pass to the National Homebrew Conference in Minnesota in June (or a nice gift certificate). It should be fun. Brew now for upcoming competitions - we'll do the brewpon system again in 2010.
