Hay, did we ever get a beer style for the fill in months to finalize the calendar? I think I am going to try and give you guys a run for your money this year. Geoff

Hello, Geoff.
Yes, we need styles for September and November.
The following catagories have not yet been included: 8. English Pale Ale 9. Scottish/Irish 12. Porter 13. Stout
From these, I would suggest categories 8 and 12.

Looking at the AHA Club-Only schedule I have decided to make a couple of minor changes to the 2009 schedule. The changes are all after July, 2009. I put Amber Hybrids in August and Amber Lagers in Sept. to align with AHA. I added Porter in November per Dennis' suggestion and changed December to Christmas Winter Specialty because it seemed more appropriate for the season.
Jan. - Cat. 16, Belgian and French Ales Feb. - Cat. 10, American Ales Mar. - Beers with O.G. over 1.080 April - Beers with at least 50% Extract May - Cat. 2, Pilsner June - Cat. 17, Sour Ales July - Cat 24 - 26, Mead Aug. - Cat. 7, Amber Hybrids Sept. - Cat. 3, European Amber Lager Oct. - Cat. 18, Belgian Strong Nov. - Cat. 12, Porter Dec. - Cat. 21A, Christmas/Winter Specialty Spiced Ale

Part of our monthly competition is designed to send the best example of the monthly style off to the current AHA Club-Only competition, which in January is Belgian and French Ales. Unfortunately they scheduled the entry due date for January 9, a few days before our monthly "practice judging." I suggest that we pick our best example of the style by general concensus at the regular meeting (January 6) and send it off to Illinois the next day to represent the club. If you have a good Belgian and French Ale, BJCP Category 16, Witbier, Belgian Pale Ale, Saison, Biere de Garde or Belgian Specialty, bring three 12 ounce bottles to the Tuesday meeting, one to sample and two to send off if yours is the best.

Happy 2009, Jeff.
My attempt at a Belgian pale ale was bottled on 12/26. It will be 12 days old upon its unveiling before the world on 1/06.
Coincidence: The Feast of the Epiphany also falls on January 6. It commemorates the arrival of the magi twelve days after Christmas (the twelve days of Christmas).

I brewed a Belgian Pale Ale just today and I don't think I have anything in my closet to bring in. Maybe Fouch has some of his award-winning Saison?

We had the first club competition of 2009 last night at Mr. D's and it was by far the most people we've had at one of these sessions. We had to split the 22 judges into two groups to evaluate the nine Belgian and French ales. Since there was not enough of the higher scoring beers to do a best of show round, we had to chose the winners by high score instead on consensus. Complicating matters was the arithmetic, which I redid this morning, finding mistakes in both my averages and in Popy's. The OFFICIAL REVISED results put Mike Fouch's Saison in first place with 38.4 points, Thomas Lyle's Belgian Pale Ale in second place with 34.8 points and Popy's Belgian Wit in third with 34.4 points. Also picking up a point for entering (in order of points) are Bart, Guido, me (Jeff), Mike, Nick and Dennis. Next month maybe we'll have a bit more room at the new place to judge American Ales.

Another big night for beer appreciation last night (Feb. 10) with 20 people at the new Mr. D's to judge 11 American Pale, Amber and Brown Ales. It was kind of nice to have the whole place to ourselves, quiet enough to hear ourselves judge. The best beer over all was Mike Fouch's Brown Ale, giving him two out of two first place finishes so far this year. Second place went to Bart Rohrer's Brown Ale. Third place was tough to call between Jeremy, Phil, Thomas and Dennis, all four separated by a mere 0.7 points, but Jeremy Wing's Pale Ale edged out the others for third this month. Mark has set up a spread sheet on the web site to keep track of points for brewer of the year.

We had 12 people, more at times, show up for judging Beers Over 1.080 last night in the new private room at Mr. D's. It was interesting and educational and tiring. We need to make some changes so that I can get home a bit earlier and to give the beers their full respect and analysis. Dividing them up into smaller flights is a given. This would mandate that entrants bring an extra beer sample for a mini best of show judging after the smaller flights have been finished. We'll implement this next month. Changing the day from the second Tuesday to the third Tuesday would make it more likely for Mark to attend and help with the judging. I'd like to start that in April also. Thanks to everyone for coming last night. It was fun even though it was late.
David Grymonpre's Belgian Strong Dark Ale won first place. Dean Palmer's Imperial IPA took second. Geoff Hall's Old Ale took third. (Jeremy Wing's Belgian Specialty was so close to Geoff's in points that it was almost a tie, but the more experienced judges picked Geoff's.) Thomas, Dennis, Ben Romano, and Harry Nolan also pick up a point for participating.

Fifteen or sixteen people (depending on whether you count JB) came to Mr. D's last night to judge 5 extract beers for the monthly competition. Mike Jahner's American IPA came in first this month, followed by Bart's Blonde Ale in second and Geoff (Guido)'s Kumquat Wheat beer a close third. Taegen and Mike Cohen also had very good beers, a Bitter and an APA respectively. Next month, May 19, we'll be doing category 2 Pilsner. Finally a category that I can enter. Woohoo!

This year I scheduled Amber Hybrids for August, but I just looked at the AHA Club-Only competition schedule and the deadline for entries for Amber Hybrids is August 19. If we move the judging session in August back to the second Tuesday we should be fine.

Last night at Mr. D's 13 brave souls met for "May, Battle Pilsner". We had 5 entries from BJCP categories 1 and 2, all of which were very good. Third place this month goes to Don Veasey's Bohemian Pils, second to Bart Rohrer's Classic American Pils, and first is my Dortmunder Export. Also picking up points for entering are Shane Varga with a German Pils and Thomas Lyle with a Classic American Pils. The next few months are June: Category 17 Sour Ales July: Categories 24 - 26 Mead August: Category 7 Amber Hybrids

That's right, Tuesday the 16th, Sour Beers, BJCP Category 17, Berliner Weisse, Flanders Red and Brown, Lambics. I am now realizing that I may not be able to "play" that night since I have to be at the airport before 0-dark:30 Wednesday to go to Oakland. Can you guys do this without me or should we change to Monday?

We had about a dozen people come out last evening to judge sour beers in the Intraclub competition.
Jeff Gladish came in first and third place with a Berliner Weiss and a Flanders Red, and Mike Fouch took second with his Flanders Red. Geoff Hall also had several good lambics as entries.
Next month, July 21st, we move on to judge meads

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't our intra club rules prevent someone from entering mutltiple beers Actually ok to enter, but only the highest score counts). If so, Geoff should receive third place and a brewpon. If I am mistaken, I will award Jeff 2 brewpons.
